On the meanings of “multiculturalism” and “interculturalism”

Abstract

This article analyses the concepts “multicultural”, “intercultural”, “multiculturalism” and “interculturalism” from a grammatical and etymological perspective, and from the context of multi and intercultural debates, showing various dimensions and the differentiations made from these dimensions, as well as the relationship between the network of terms. Likewise, the investigation of the meaning of these terms is carried out through the definitions given by authors such as Will Kimlycka, León Olivé, Mauricio Beuchot and Miguel A. Bartolomé, with the purpose of providing a point of reference to sort out references and clarify meanings when these concepts are used with theoretical pretensions.
