Abstract

The government of the municipality of Arandas, Jalisco, has been looking for a solution to the problem of the disposal of its urban solid waste (USW) for some years. Currently, there is a “dump” where such waste is deposited without any established control, which encourages the generation of harmful species such as flies, cockroaches, rats and mice, etc.; in addition to the contamination of the air, soil and water. The solution begins with the separation of waste from the site of generation, but it makes no sense to separate garbage if there is no established subsequent treatment system. Raising awareness among the population about the separation of garbage from home is quite necessary, since, if it is not carried out, it implies not being able to provide effective treatment to the urban solid waste (USW) generated. In countries and municipalities where garbage separation is already practiced, it is because the community is forced to do so, either by not collecting their garbage if it is not properly separated, or by implementing economic fines. With the support of the Arandas City Council and the José Mario Molina Pasquel y Henríquez Technological Institute Arandas Campus, a study was conducted to determine the level of awareness of the population of Arandas about the need to separate garbage at home. For this purpose, a survey was designed, which was applied to parents or guardians of students at the following educational institutions: CONALEP Arandas campus, Arandas Regional Preparatory School UDG, CBTIS and the José Mario Molina Pasquel y Henríquez Technological Institute Arandas Campus. The type of research conducted is quantitative and descriptive, where the sample was selected by convenience (to optimize time and costs in applying the survey). According to the results obtained in the analysis of the surveys, it is observed that the Arandas population is concerned about environmental conservation and that there is a very good

disposition to separate garbage at home (87% of those surveyed).
