Abstract

Hermeneutics is the science and art of interpretation. It deals with understanding texts; that is, deconstructing them in order to study them and/or place them in their respective contexts. It is not limited to written, spoken or acted texts: it can be a method for understanding each and every one of the world's languages (reality as text): cultural, archaeological, socio-spatial, visual. It is currently a fundamental attitude of philosophy and the human sciences; it has emerged as a theory and practice of interpretation that finds in (symbolic) language its "shaman" or mediation of meaning.
