Abstract

Given the importance of conserving protected natural areas and considering that anthropogenic activities can affect plants and soil in the Flor del Bosque State Park, the objective of this work was to analyze the concentration of six toxic heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb) in leaves of eight plant species (Quercus mexicano, Quercus rugosa, Juniperus deppeana, Juniperus flaccida, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus globulus, Mimosa malacophylla and Euphorbiaceae) and soil samples grouped in four different zones (pine, oak, eucalyptus and grasslands) within the study area, for which plant samples were collected for one year and soil samples during the rainy and dry seasons. The samples were treated according to the provisions of Mexican regulations to quantify metals. It is worth noting that the six metals analyzed (Cr, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb) were found in all plant species and in the total fraction of the soil, while in the available fraction of the soil, Cr was not detectable in any area, indicating that it will not be easily acquired by plants through the roots. A high correlation between Cr and Cu was found in most plants, indicating a common source. The concentrations of the metals are within the permissible limits to avoid phytotoxicity, but they can continue to accumulate in the roots, stems and leaves and cause damage to plants and deterioration of the protected natural area "Flor del Bosque Puebla".
