Developing an intercultural value-based dialogue

Peaceful coexistence and inclusion are not only subject to enjoying the goods and systems of the welfare state. By building shared values, a new concept is proposed: the valuable, as a propaedeutic factor of value. A dialogue oriented towards values begins by ‘making the valuables that each one carries speak’ among them so that every actor can enter into the point of view of the other and then come to produce shared values. Starting from the valuable, the essay outlined the path of a new model of integration: saving some features of ‘diversity’ (multiculturalism) and creating some ‘similarities’ (interculturality). Through the similarity/difference entanglement, both migrants and ethnic groups as well as natives absorb something of the beliefs and values of Alter, and at the same time become aware of the complementarity and interdependence with Alter, the core of a mind of otherness and a basic requirement for conflict management. Following this path, each actor embraces an ever-widening network of indeterminate Alter (linking bonds) without losing its own identity and belonging. Finally, the essay suggests operational techniques that engage, as game-changers of a possible society, the school and social services, on the one hand, and local political entities and civil society, on the other (deliberative democracy).
