Abstract

Gregarine Nematopsis infestation in white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is associated with decreased production and low weight, as well as a possible predisposition to viral infections. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of parasitosis by gregarine Nematopsis sp. on the growth of farmed Litopenaeus vannamei. Four cages were installed with a PVC pipe structure and plastic mesh with a diameter of 6 mm, 1.7 m high and 1.5 m on each side, covering a bottom surface of 2.25 m2, in a pond of a shrimp farm located in the area of La Pesca, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Twenty-nine previously weighed L. vannamei shrimp were placed in each cage, with a grade 2 infestation of gregarine Nematopsis (6 to 10 parasites per shrimp). The shrimp were fed with commercial feed throughout the experiment. During the first 5 days, 6 g/kg of sodium monensin was added to the feed of 2 cages. After these 5 days, the shrimp in the 4 cages were fed for 38 more days. At the end of the experiment, the shrimp were weighed. The untreated shrimp had an average weight gain of 2.5 g and the treated shrimp had an average weight gain of 2.79 g. This research shows that the negative effect on shrimp growth caused by Nematopsis sp. infestation can be reversed if the infected shrimp are treated with sodium monensin, which has a therapeutic effect that eliminates the parasite without affecting shrimp growth.
