Los embarazos no planeados son un problema de salud reproductiva principalmente en países en desarrollo. El uso de métodos anticonceptivos de forma correcta y sostenida (conducta anticonceptiva), es un factor clave para mejorar la salud principalmente de mujeres y niños, dado que reducirían significativamente las mortalidad materna e infantil, los abortos en condiciones en riesgo y los problemas de salud en niños menores de cinco años. Existen muchos factores que se asocian a una conducta anticonceptiva de riesgo, sin embargo, gran parte de la literatura sobre anticoncepción se ha centrado en las características demográficas, cognitivas o conductuales de las mujeres en riesgo. El fenómeno de la anticoncepción es muy complejo, por lo que es necesario e importante considerar aspectos sobre los factores ambientales y sociales que influyen en las elecciones individuales de la anticoncepción. Por lo tanto, es necesario analizar la anticoncepción desde una perspectiva más amplia que permita integrar aspectos sociales y culturales. El propósito de este estudio es describir los factores que influyen en la conducta anticonceptiva desde el modelo ecológico. La perspectiva ecológica ha resultado útil para ampliar la comprensión de una serie de problemas sociales y de salud complejos, como lo es la conducta anticonceptiva, dado que integra estructuras sociales que influyen directa o indirectamente en el uso o no uso de los métodos anticonceptivos.
