Abstract

Growth, density and profitability of freshwater lobster (Cherax quadricarinatus) farming in Sinaloa were analyzed during September 2005 and January 2006. Stockings of 7 (pond 1) and 16 (pond 2) organisms/m-2 were used. A nonparametric method (Kruskal-Wallis) was applied; the response variables were density, weight and sex, and the experimental unit was the ponds. Sampling was weekly and 40 lobsters were captured in PVC tubes. Total length (TL) and cephalothoracic (CL) were measured in mm and total weight (WT) in g. Biometric correlations were performed and growth was estimated using the von Bertalanffy model. The highest average was 41.2 g at a density of 7 org/m-2, although the k (growth rate) was 0.30 in the ponds, and the lobsters also showed isometric growth. From the first year, profits of $3,419,165.00 were obtained, which represented 26.8% of the total income, thus maintaining sustained growth until the fifth year (2011). The financial evaluation determined that the investment is economically profitable, its NPV (Net Present Value) analysis was $9,060,554.00, and according to the financial indicators, this value was optimal for the project. As an indicator of profitability, the IRR (Internal Rate of Return) was 66%, being higher than the minimum acceptable rate of return and concluding the profitability of the crop at 59%. Likewise, the state of Sinaloa, due to its geographic location and the results of growth, sizes, yield of the lobster and the financial analysis of the culture, indicated C. quadricarinatus as an alternative for development in the region, being the lobster of interest in aquaculture of new species in tropical areas, although in Sinaloa there is practically no research for commercial production purposes.
