Abstract

Mosquitoes are the main route of transmission of malaria, which affects human health and has a negative impact on the economy, since treatments are expensive and prevent sick individuals from working. One of the strategies to minimize the transmission of this disease is the use of chemical insecticides, which, despite being excellent methods to reduce the insect population, cause adverse effects on humans and the environment. For this reason, it is necessary to explore other alternatives that are low cost and environmentally friendly, such as the use of plant extracts, which are a potential source of natural insecticides. In this work, the insecticidal effect of a plant endemic to the state of Guanajuato, Heliopsis longipes A. Gray Blake, against the mosquito Anopheles albimanus, the malaria vector, was determined. The results obtained demonstrate that H. longipes A. Gray Blake has insecticidal potential to be used as an alternative in the control of the malaria insect vector.
