Abstract

In highly marginalized areas far from the coast, an alternative may be the cultivation of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The present study focused on determining the potential of different sources of low salinity groundwater, located in four regions ((T1), 25.43° N, 108.44° W; (T2), 25.48° N, 108.37° W;

(T3), 25.60° N, 108.40° W and (T4) 25.64° N, 108.51° W) of the

municipality of Guasave, to cultivate white shrimp. An experimental cultivation cycle was carried out with each of the four water sources for 12 weeks, along with a culture with Marine Water. Three replicas were managed for each treatment, in each of them 200 orgs/m2 were sown. The results showed that the ionic composition of the different water sources was high in bicarbonate (268 to 314.0 mg/L) and low in potassium (0.58 to 4.74 mg/L). It was determined that the final average weight did not present significant statistical differences between the treatments managed with the four sources of groundwater, but there were between these and the culture carried out in seawater, with the latter being where a higher final average weight was observed (8.75 g). The lowest growth (6.78 g) occurred in the culture with water from the T3 source. The difference in the concentration of ions was not reflected in the survival and weight of the organisms. Although the value of these variables was higher when the organisms were cultured in seawater. The results obtained indicate that it is possible to carry out shrimp cultures with low salinity groundwater for highly marginalized areas, in order to increase the standard of living of the population in these areas.
