Perception of the notion of culture of peace at the Autonomous Indigenous University of Mexico

Conflicts and violence are elements that are immersed in the multiple spaces where human beings coexist and interrelate. Both one and the other have been present throughout the history of humanity, which is why many experts have studied and proposed various ways to resolve them, through the use of methods in accordance with their nature. Although this phenomenon is multifactorial, one of the causes is that people do not have the necessary knowledge or skills to reach an agreement when there is a contradiction between the interests and objectives of individuals or groups. For this reason, national and international organizations such as the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and UNESCO recommend that educational strategies that promote the construction of a culture for peace for a creative approach to conflicts be included in the school curriculum, in various school contexts. The objective of the study is to identify the perception that students have about the attitudes that are related to the practice of the culture of peace. The results show that the students of the Universidad Autónoma Indígena de México (UAIM), Unidad Mochicahui, mostly affirm that active listening, dialogue and respect for the environment are attitudes that favor a culture of peace. The applied methodology has a mixed approach. The results were achieved through the application of a survey to a sample of 167 students of the sixth semester, and by conducting interviews with the coordinators of the educational programs.
