Geospatial analysis for the delimitation of the federal maritime-terrestrial zone in protected natural areas, case of El Maviri beach, Sinaloa, Mexico

Abstract

Over the years, tourism activities, especially in Protected Natural Areas (PNAs), have negatively impacted the flora and fauna that inhabit them, largely due to problems with land tenure regularization in the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) in Mexico. These problems are largely mitigated by the delimitation of this coastal strip, thereby inhibiting the irregular occupation of federal areas, which leads to better conditions for developing strategies that guarantee their monitoring, protection, and, above all, conservation. This article aims to describe the current state of land use within the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) of the protected natural area known as Isla El Maviri. This was achieved by generating a georeferenced database using geospatial analysis techniques, specifically digital photogrammetric systems and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in accordance with Mexican Official Standard NOM-146-SEMARNAT-2017. The goal is to apply sustainability criteria within a socio-economic and environmental perspective to tourist areas located within the zone. The study determines the unsustainable anthropogenic impact caused primarily by the construction of tourist infrastructure (palapas and restaurants), which has resulted in considerable damage to the physical conditions of the beach. Data was collected through aerial photography over a sampling polygon encompassing the restaurant infrastructure, yielding orthorectified images from which a GIS of the area was generated.

This allowed for the identification of restaurant encroachment areas covering approximately 757 m2.
