Challenges for women in engineering at a higher education institution

Abstract

Despite global progress regarding gender equity, women in the fields of science, technology, and mathematics continue to face various obstacles to professional success. This study aimed to identify the most common challenges faced by women pursuing engineering degrees at the San Luis Potosí Institute of Technology (part of the National Technological Institute of Mexico). To this end, a survey comprising 22 dichotomous questions and one open-ended question was administered to a sample of 150 students, followed by descriptive and inferential analyses. The results indicate that family support (95.3%), motivation to complete their studies (89.3%), and satisfaction with their chosen field (88.7%) represent significant strengths. However, the perception of workplace inequity (56%), financial difficulties (35.3%), and experiences of discrimination (24.7%) reveal the persistence of structural barriers. The study concludes that while female engineering students generally perceive the environment as favorable for their academic persistence, challenges remain—specifically regarding the complexity of STEM subjects, instances of gender bias, and economic or personal circumstances that could impact their educational trajectories.
