University perception of sustainable development: comparative analysis by area of knowledge

Abstract

Universities play a key role in promoting sustainable development through their substantive functions. The objective of this study is to analyze perceptions by subject area regarding strategies that contribute to the sustainable development of a Mexican public university. A descriptive-comparative, cross-sectional, non-experimental design was employed, involving 739 respondents (faculty and students). The data were processed using independent-groups hypothesis tests (Z-test), ANOVA, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test. The results show significant differences: the Chemistry-Biology subject area has the highest means for both internal and external perceptions of sustainability in both groups. Faculty perceptions present higher means than those of students. It is concluded that perceptions of the internal and external strategies implemented vary by disciplinary background, suggesting the need to develop policies and practices that integrate sustainability and promote it at the university.
